A workshop was held in Kiev, Ukraine in July 2017 in order to address the constitutional crisis that is going on in that nation. The organizers of this workshop were two nonprofits, the International Institute for Democracy and Electoral Assistance as well as the Center of Policy and Legal Reform. After the workshop, Sujit Choudhry said that it was an honor to meet the top constitutional experts in the Ukraine where he was able to hold high-level discussions with others in regards to executive powers. He said that Ukraine’s democracy efforts have been very challenging for over 20 years because of a number of reasons, foremost among them the fact that the president of Ukraine holds far too much power, the political parties are pretty weak, and the electoral system is in need of improvement.
While Sujit Choudhry was a highlight of this workgroup he had peers also taking part in this meeting. This included International Idea’s Sumit Bisarya, Sergyi Holovatyi of the Constitutional Commission of Ukraine and Dalarna University’s Thomas Sidelius among other honored participants. Over the course of his professional career Sujit Choudhry has lectured in more than 25 different nations. He has also informed many policymakers engaged in constitutional processes such as in Libya, Egypt, South Africa, and other countries.
Sujit Choudhry is the leader of an organization he founded called the Center for Constitutional Transitions, headquartered in Berkeley, California. His organization provides fact-based research to those government officials who are designing constitutions. He established this organization in 2012 and is the director of it.
